Want to Decrease Food Cravings? Avoid Restricting Foods

by Meri Raffetto RD, LDN

Do images of chocolate instantly make you feel anxious and guilty? If so you are not alone. A recent study published in Appetite found that people who have been on seven or more weight loss diets have an increased desire for "forbidden" foods. When shown pictures of chocolate, the dieters reported increased cravings, as well as increased feelings of guilt, anxiety and depression. These characteristics were not experienced in the non-dieting group. This goes to show that overly restricted diets can lead to more food cravings than allowing some treats in moderation. Finding the right balance is important. Eating nutrient rich foods most of the time but leaving room for some of your favorite treats once in awhile is a more successful way to approach weight loss than all or nothing.
